Starbucks, home of caffeine addicted teenagers and adults who pretended to be writers. In a small corner of the café, Noel was leaning over a chess set, contemplating opening moves and strategies. He moved the king’s pawn up two spaces before hearing his name being called for his beloved hot chocolate. Noel briefly sighed, it was a Saturday and he was currently alone at Starbucks playing chess with himself. This was the stuff of loser legends. If only he had his fighter with him...scratch that…if his fighter existed, then he would be happy.
Noel turned his sharp gaze towards the door as he gulped down the sweet drink. He wanted someone interesting to walk through that door, someone interesting who could play chess, some interesting who could play chess and make a funny remark…that wasn’t too much to ask, right? The world had already trolled him once with a blank room. He deserved to be given a bone. Noel was left to contemplate on his teenage angst as he moved the chess pieces around the board. He was replaying games from past generations, studying why the grandmasters made the choices they did. The dark-haired boy used his feet to push his chair out slightly and let his body slide downward.
With a quick shake of the head, Noel abruptly changed his posture. Bah! Why was he sitting here acting so damn depressed? Noel didn’t need this imaginary fighter. He had always worked with what had been given to him and thrived. With a better resolve, he looked down at the chess set again and began muttering to himself. The dark-haired boy was ready to learn more from the game that had taught him so much.
